The LivCom Awards

The International Awards for Liveable Communities/LivCom Awards were launched in 1997 and is the World’s major Awards Competition focusing on International Best Practice regarding the management of the local environment and development. The objective of LivCom Awards is to develop and share International Best Practices, with further objective of improving living quality of individual citizens through the creation of “liveable communities”. As a UN-backed Awards Competition, LivCom partners an MOU with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 2007, followed by establishing partnership with multiple UN Agencies and international organizations afterwards.

Whole City Award

Explain what practical measures have been taken by your city on meeting the interests and needs of older persons, and promoting active ageing.

We won the overall gold 1st place for our city population, they bumped us into a little bigger population because of our daytime population, so cities between 75,000 and 150,000, and we won first in that. St. Cloud was the only American city at this year’s awards, which cities have to be invited to apply for.

Working to develop these four policy documents has been a unique and rewarding experience. The team led the municipality through a grass-roots community engagement process creating a long term planning framework that will guide current and future councils and staff.

2025 | Avcilar Istanbul, Türkiye

The LivCom Awards 2025 took place in Avcilar Istanbul, Türkiye from 18-21 November inclusive.
Since open for registration, LivCom has received 281 applicants from 52 countries. A total of 30 cities and 37 projects from 34 countries have been invited to the Finals.

2021 | Online

Due to the global pandemic, the 2021 LivCom Presentations were organized virtually for the first time in history at 6-8 December 2021. City delegates from different corners of the world gathered online to share and celebrate their endeavors in improving environment and the living quality of their citizens.

It will be held in Avcilar Istanbul during 18-21 November, 2026.

Participation in the competition is free of charge. However, you will be responsible for covering your round-trip travel, accommodation and personal expenses.

For Whole City Award, the initial written submission should consist of: Maximum of 4,500 words in English – not including titles/tables/headers etc. Maximum of 24 photographs to be captioned and dated.

For Project and T&S Awards, the word limit for a Submission is 3,000, not counting photo captions, maps, tables, diagrams etc., together with up to 12 captioned photographs.

If the submissions pass the evaluation, your delegates will be invited to the Finals in Avcilar Istanbul and make onsite presentations. The Judging Criteria have been upgraded this year. Please check detailed requirements on the website.

If the Submissions pass the preliminary evaluation and the applicants are shortlisted in the Finals, a maximum of three representatives for Whole City Award, Project Award and Technology and Solution Award will be permitted to make the Presentation, plus an interpreter if required. At the end of each Presentation, the Judges will ask questions. The award results will be announced at the Awards Ceremony of LivCom Finals.

Whether to participate in or win an Award at the LivCom Finals or not will be judged by the LivCom Panel of Judges, based on the combined scores of the Submission, Finals presentation and the answers to the questions, in order to explore the best practices and innovation in building liveable communities. The International Panel of Judges comprises environmental and development management professionals, officials and senior experts from the United Nations, etc. The jury won’t tolerate applicants to falsify the information and evidence provided.
